Christina Applegate opened up about her battle with multiple sclerosis (MS) during an appearance on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast, describing it as the worst thing that has happened in her entire life. She revealed that she has 30 lesions on her brain, with the biggest one behind her right eye causing significant pain. Despite not experiencing any vision issues, Applegate shared that MS has affected her mobility and can cause seizure-like feelings in her brain.

MS is a disease of the nervous system where the body’s immune system attacks the protective covering around nerves, disrupting communication between the brain and the rest of the body. Applegate admitted that on bad days with pain, she tends to go back to bed instead of stretching her muscles, referring to herself as the worst MSer who struggles with managing the symptoms. She likened MS to a mean girl that will push back if she overexerts herself physically, expressing her frustration and anger about the disease that cannot be easily overcome.

Applegate emphasized the importance of speaking truthfully about her MS journey, acknowledging that she did not do so during her battle with breast cancer. She underwent a double mastectomy in 2008 and had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed in 2017 as a preventive measure against ovarian cancer. Sharing more details about her daily life with MS, she mentioned struggles like incontinence issues that may lead to wearing diapers, highlighting the challenges she faces on a regular basis.

Despite the difficulties, Applegate finds humor in coping with her condition and joked about it during a surprise appearance at the Emmys in January. She was nominated for an award for her role in “Dead to Me” and used humor to address the audience’s reaction to her standing ovation, displaying a cane with the message “FU MS.” While uncertain about future awards show appearances, Applegate is committed to keeping it real about her diagnosis and using humor as a shield to cope with the emotional aspects of her journey.

Applegate appreciates the humorous side of her situation, finding solace in being able to park in handicapped spots and board planes early when traveling. She shared insights into her coping mechanisms during an episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” highlighting the importance of humor in making others feel comfortable around her as a disabled person. By using humor to deflect and lighten the mood, she strives to create a welcoming environment where people can laugh about her experiences and not be afraid to engage with her.

Fans can expect Applegate to continue sharing her journey with MS authentically and truthfully, using humor as a coping mechanism and a way to connect with others. While she acknowledges the challenges and frustrations of living with the disease, she appreciates the support and understanding that humor can bring when dealing with difficult circumstances. Despite the ongoing struggles and uncertainties, Applegate remains resilient, determined to navigate her MS journey with honesty, grace, and a healthy dose of humor.
