PEMBINA, N.D. (KFGO) – The state’s congressional delegation is asking Motor Coach Industries to reconsider its decision to close its Pembina bus manufacturing plant, which has been a key employer in the small northeast North Dakota community since 1963.

About 175 members of the Machinist Union’s Local W384 were told they will be out of a job by the end of the year.

Senators Kevin Cramer and John Hoeven, along with Representative Kelly Armstrong, say the Pembina plant’s workers produce a top-quality product and that they will will work with union members, MCI, and state and local officials to try and preserve the facility.

The company maintained they were unable to find skilled workers in Pembina but union leadership took issue with that claim, saying they had offered to partner with the company on recruiting and apprenticeship programs to meet its workforce needs.
