Dina Butcher

I’ve known Dina Butcher for years. At times, she’s been a political adversary, and others as an ally. But I’ve always known her to be a good and decent person that has made decisions based on honesty and integrity. We have access to each other and often enjoy a spirited debate. All that being said, I never knew the part of her life that she told me and the listening audience this week.

Dina’s grandmother, aunts and cousins were murdered at a concentration camp during the Holocaust.

I first heard about this from a good friend and treasured member of Fargo media, Jim Shaw. Jim often serves as a guest host for me when I take some time off. Jim was the first one to write a wonderful article about Dina’s family in the Forum and interview her live on KFGO.

What Dina told both me and Jim was nothing short of horrific. She shared what every Jewish family went through, expressed the fear and devastation they endured, and stressed the theft of human dignity throughout it all. The Nazis were the worst example of what the human race can become. They were evil and vicious, and empowered by the acceptance of the people being governed.

America is not innocent in all of this, and Ken Burns isn’t afraid to show the truth in that. Burns is doing a fabulous job on PBS showing how America dealt with the Holocaust. It has the Nation’s attention and everyone talking. Burns isn’t afraid to tell the truth: we should have done more. Much more.

Dina also pointed out the parallels from Nazi Germany to present-day America. As unpopular as it is to discuss and even teach the hatred, it can’t be ignored. It’s become okay to drive around with F*** Biden bumper stickers or fly a flag with the same. It’s also become widely accepted to fly the Confederate flag. A flag that once symbolized slavery.

Dina had the courage to point out the parallels between the rise of the Nazi party and behavior of Trump supporters. Both assumed there was no risk in the beginning, then learned to accept the risk, and eventually embraced it.

The ONLY way to end the risk, is through your vote and voice.

Good riding with you,

Joel
