The Vancouver Canucks announced that goalie Thatcher Demko has been placed on long-term injury reserve retroactively due to a knee injury. In response, forward Arshdeep Bains has been recalled from the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks. This move was likely made to create cap space and a roster spot for Bains’ recall, providing extra forward insurance for the team. This could hint at the injury statuses of Elias Lindholm and Dakota Joshua.

To be placed on LTIR, a player must miss at least 10 games. Demko was placed on LTIR retroactive to when he was initially injured against the Winnipeg Jets, with the Canucks having played six games since then. This means he would need to miss four more games and could potentially return on April 6 against the Kings. This timeline is typical for Demko’s injury situation.

Demko, 28, has not played since March 9 when he was injured against the Jets. Prior to his injury, he was performing at a Vezina Trophy level this season with impressive stats. His 34 wins are second in the NHL among goalies, behind Alexandar Georgiev of the Colorado Avalanche. As the backup goalie, Casey DeSmith has a record of 11-6-6 in 25 games, with solid goals-against average and save percentage.

Bains has showcased his skills with 14 goals and 35 assists in 53 games for Abbotsford this season. The Canucks currently hold a strong record of 45-19-8 and are leading the Pacific Division. They are only two points behind the New York Rangers for first place in the entire league. Vancouver last won the Presidents Trophy in the 2011-12 season.

Overall, Demko’s placement on LTIR allows the Canucks to make necessary roster adjustments and create flexibility for Bains’ recall. The team will monitor Demko’s injury progress and hope for his return in early April, while continuing to maintain their strong position in the standings.
