Iranian players sang the national anthem before the start of their World Cup match against the U.S. The players were reportedly threatened if they didn’t participate.
The Iranian team stayed silent in their first match in support of protests back home.

Berhalter, Adams navigate through awkward press conference
United States soccer coach Gregg Berhalter and team captain Tyler Adams faced an unusual string of questions from reporters ahead of their match against Iran.
Adams was asked about discrimination against Black people in the U.S. and was swiped for pronouncing Iran as “Eye-ran” instead of “E-ran.”
Berhalter faced questions about U.S. immigration and naval policy.Berhalter also apologized for social media posts that depicted the Iranian flag without the Islamic Republic emblem. Iran called on FIFA to kick the U.S. out of the World Cup over it. The posts were meant to support protesters in Iran.
“We had no idea about what U.S. Soccer put out,” Berhalter said. “All we can do on our behalf is apologize on behalf of the players and the staff.”

United States gets set to play Iran
The United States will take on Iran in a pivotal World Cup match that will decide who gets to move on from Group B to the knockout stage of the tournament.
The U.S. is coming off ties with Wales and England while Iran lost to England and beat Wales. A loss or draw for the United States will sent them home and help Iran move onto the next round.
