Japanese rock star Yoshiki recently made a last-minute decision to perform on the runway at the unveiling of his high-end fashion line, Maison Yoshiki, during Milan Fashion Week 2024. The presentation featured a mix of minimal, primarily black satin, silk, and faux fur trimmed pieces accompanied by Yoshiki’s performance on the piano of Bach’s Prelude in C Major and his arrangement of “Nessun dorma” from Puccini’s “Turandot.”
Known for his fearless specificity and creativity across various industries, Yoshiki’s debut as a fashion designer received praise for its “performance quality.” Despite his hesitance to perform and shift the focus away from the clothes, Yoshiki decided to play based on his team’s suggestion, aiming to take the audience on a journey through his music.
Yoshiki’s multifaceted abilities were highlighted through his composition of electronic tracks for the fashion show, as well as his collaborations in music, directing a documentary, and philanthropic efforts. Raised in a musical family, Yoshiki found solace in punk and hard-rock music after his father’s suicide at a young age, leading him to pursue a career in music. Co-founding X Japan in 1982 with childhood friend Toshimitsu Deyama, Yoshiki achieved success with the band’s platinum-selling albums and groundbreaking performances. Looking ahead, Yoshiki is working on composing the official song for Hello Kitty’s 50th anniversary, writing a symphony for a full orchestra, and collaborating with fellow Asian icon, G-Dragon, from the K-pop group Bigbang. He attributes his dedication to art and support for people to his fans, whom he credits for keeping him motivated and inspired in his artistic endeavors.
