Former President Donald Trump has been vocal in blaming President Joe Biden and Democrats for surging crime levels, out-of-control Democratic cities, and “migrant crime” in his campaign rallies, news releases, and on Truth Social. However, FBI statistics released this year indicated a steep drop in crime across the country in the last year, with major cities like Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C. reporting a decrease in violent crime. While Trump and his campaign have consistently pointed the finger at Biden, government data does not support the claims of skyrocketing crime numbers.

The Trump campaign has frequently referred to rising crime levels under Biden’s administration, with violent crime allegedly increasing in every American city. However, reported violent crime across the country decreased by 6% in the last quarter of 2022 compared to the same period in 2023, according to FBI data. Moreover, big cities with Democratic mayors saw significant drops in violent crime, murders, rape, and aggravated assaults. The reported national rate of violent crime in 2022 was lower than in 2020 when Trump was in office.

In New York City, Trump’s former hometown, major crimes have decreased by 2.3% this year compared to the same period in 2023, according to police department data. Despite Trump’s claims of soaring violence, crime levels in the city have been lower than in previous decades, with a significant drop in reported major crimes over the years. While the number of major crimes increased in recent years, reported violent crimes like murder and rape were down last year compared to previous years.

Trump’s rhetoric on “migrant crime” and the tragic surge in violent crimes against American citizens due to the border crisis is often highlighted in his speeches and news releases. However, there is no evidence of a migrant-driven crime wave in the U.S., according to local police department data. Crime reports have actually decreased in several major cities targeted by Texas’ Operation Lone Star, a program backed by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott that relocates migrants to Democratic-run cities. Cities like New York, Chicago, Washington, and Philadelphia have reported lower year-to-date crime totals compared to the same period last year.

Despite Trump’s persistent claims of rising crime levels and blaming Biden and Democrats for the situation, government data does not support the narrative. The reported drops in violent crime at the national level and in major cities contradict Trump’s assertions of skyrocketing crime. While crime rates in certain categories may have increased in specific cities, the overall trend has been a decline in violent crimes. As the FBI plans to release more comprehensive 2023 crime data in October, the issue of crime levels and responsibility remains a central point of contention between Trump and his political opponents.
