Yoshiki, best known for his music career with the band X Japan, has also ventured into the world of fashion. Growing up surrounded by his parents’ kimono shop, he was exposed to the world of fashion from a young age. While he ultimately pursued music, he believes that music and fashion are closely intertwined. With the recent launch of his Maison Yoshiki Paris brand at Milan Fashion Week, he is receiving a great response to his line and show.

In the early 1980s, Yoshiki and his bandmates in X Japan were pioneers of Japan’s Visual Kei fashion and music movement. Their unique style, featuring androgynous makeup, clothes, and brightly dyed hairstyles, attracted international interest. Despite facing criticism for their appearance overshadowing their music, Yoshiki was determined to blend his love for punk rock and glam with his classical music background. The band’s flashy fashion choices often drew attention away from their music, leading some to question their dedication to their craft.

Yoshiki’s love for fashion and Japanese tradition led him to create Yoshikimono, a rock-inspired kimono line, in 2011. The collection has been featured in museums in London, Paris, and Tokyo, showcasing the fusion of traditional Japanese clothing with a modern rock twist. Additionally, Yoshikimono collaborated with the popular anime series “Attack on Titan,” further expanding his brand’s reach and influence. Despite his indecisiveness when it comes to his wardrobe choices, Yoshiki embraces improvisation, both in his music and fashion, allowing him to express his creativity.

Reflecting on his rebellious nature in his youth, Yoshiki acknowledges the challenges he faced as critics often focused on X Japan’s fashion choices rather than their music. However, he remained confident in his musical abilities, drawing from his classical music background to push through the rough times. Yoshiki’s desire to dress in an androgynous, glam rock style, influenced by icons like David Bowie, set him apart from his peers and garnered attention for his band’s flashy image.

With his family’s kimono shop serving as the backdrop to his childhood, Yoshiki’s eventual foray into fashion seems like a natural progression. The connection between music and fashion has always been present in his life, with his recent success in the fashion industry marking a new chapter in his creative journey. As he continues to balance his music career with his expanding fashion brand, Yoshiki remains committed to blending his love for fashion, Japanese tradition, and rock music into unique and compelling collections that resonate with audiences worldwide.
