Anthony Mackie, known for his role as Sam Wilson/Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is set to take on the mantle of Captain America in the upcoming film “Captain America: Brave New World.” While promoting his latest series “Twisted Metal,” Mackie discussed the differences between working on Marvel projects and other projects, noting that there is more storytelling freedom outside of the MCU. He expressed that working on Marvel movies is more controlled due to the existing comic book content, whereas “Twisted Metal” allowed for more creativity in building the world of the story.

Mackie pointed out that projects like “Twisted Metal” have the freedom to introduce and kill off characters at will, something that is not as easily done in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He emphasized the challenge of staying within the lines of the comic books when introducing new characters or storylines. “Captain America: Brave New World” is directed by Julius Onah and co-written by Malcolm Spellman, the creator of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” The film features a star-studded cast that includes Harrison Ford, Liv Tyler, and Tim Blake Nelson.

While Mackie enjoyed his time working on “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” he lamented the show not getting a second season. The limited series followed Sam Wilson’s transformation into Captain America, setting the stage for his character to lead in “Captain America: Brave New World.” Mackie expressed his excitement at working with his co-stars Sebastian Stan and Daniel Brühl and was disappointed to not continue with them in a second season of the show.

“Captain America: Brave New World” is scheduled to open in theaters on Feb. 14, 2025, and marks Mackie’s debut as the titular character in his own standalone film. The movie will explore Sam Wilson’s journey as he takes on the mantle of Captain America and navigates his new role in the Marvel universe. Mackie’s portrayal of Falcon and now Captain America has solidified his place as a fan-favorite in the MCU, and fans are eagerly anticipating his upcoming solo outing as the iconic superhero.

In his interview with Radio Times, Mackie reflected on the differences between his experiences working on Marvel projects and other projects. He highlighted the challenges of staying true to the comic book source material while also trying to bring something new and fresh to the character he portrays. “Twisted Metal” offered him the opportunity to explore a different type of storytelling and creative freedom that differs from his work within the established confines of the MCU.

Mackie also praised the collaborative and enjoyable experience of working with his co-stars on “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” expressing his desire to continue collaborating with them in a potential second season of the show. However, his transition to leading his own Captain America film signifies a new chapter in his career and the opportunity to further develop his character in the Marvel universe. Mackie’s journey from Falcon to Captain America exemplifies the growth and evolution of his character, and fans are eagerly anticipating his next adventure in “Captain America: Brave New World.”
