Joy Behar, co-host of The View, recently shared on the Behind the Table podcast that she auditioned for Saturday Night Live in 1975. Despite having a funny character to perform, SNL creator Lorne Michaels did not laugh during her audition. Behar recounted how Michaels explained that he didn’t want to laugh because then she would think she had the job. Behar admitted she didn’t even want the job and was relieved when she didn’t get hired.

Behar acknowledged that Michaels is known for not laughing during auditions, but she found it a bit discouraging to perform for someone who didn’t react. However, she ultimately felt she was not ready for the stress of a role on SNL and actually prayed not to get the job. Her wish came true, and she did not join the original cast of SNL, which included Chevy Chase, John Belushi, and Dan Aykroyd. Instead, Behar went on to have a successful comedy career, appearing in Hollywood movies and TV shows before becoming a co-host on The View.

Behar mentioned on an episode of The View in February 2023 that she was actually happy to leave the show at that time because all of her friends had already left. However, her departure was short-lived, and she returned to The View in 2015, where she continues to co-host the show alongside other panelists.

Although Behar’s audition for SNL did not result in her getting hired, she expressed gratitude for not landing the job, as she realized she was not prepared for the stress that came with it. Behar’s career took a different path, leading her to successful opportunities in film and television before finding her niche as a co-host on The View. Despite facing challenges and setbacks in her career, Behar has continued to thrive in the entertainment industry and has established herself as a respected and beloved figure in the world of comedy and daytime talk shows.
