In the last few years of her life, Kirstie Alley wanted to live a more reclusive life by searching for the perfect farm.
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the late actress revealed, however, that she was having trouble discovering a new place to start her next chapter, crediting her fear of people from watching too much “Dateline” and the ABC News program “2020,” as one of the factors.
“Searching for that small rural ‘farm,’” she wrote in a Tweet on July 16, 2020. “As the search continues I’m learning more about this country and myself.”
“It’s difficult finding a new home base,” Alley added in a separate tweet 20 minutes later. “Weirdly just when I find the perfect little farm I realize I know no one within hundreds of miles: I’m friendly but can’t say I’m good at making new friends…because I watch too much Dateline & 2020.”
A year later, she revealed that she had found her farm after all, and was working to build the home from the ground up — but not in the rural setting she’d hoped for. Instead, she purchased 2 acres of land with waterfront views in her longtime community of Clearwater, Florida — where the Scientology headquarters are located. And an image from August 2022 shows the home was still under construction and likely incomplete at the time of her passing.
“Parts gutted.. all doors, molding blAh blAh saved,” she said, chronicling the work underway. “The view you see is mostly make old porch the kitchen and building new porch on the water side. Funny how these early houses didn’t site their homes on the water side. Same in Maine.”
In October, she revealed that was still “so busy remodeling,” and how windows were soon going to be installed.

Alley also still maintained another waterfront Clearwater property that she purchased in 2008 for $1.8 million. The home was made up of six bedrooms and 11 baths — spanning 9,200 square feet on 2.3 acres of land. She had plans to demolish this home as well, but that never materialized.
Meanwhile, as she was building her dream house in the Sunshine State, Alley sold her longtime home in California for $7.8 million in 2021. Located in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles, Alley, had owned the home for more than 20 years.
It was in this Los Feliz home where Alley was known to live an unconventional life with her animals. The “Cheers” star — a well-known animal lover — not only kept her beloved dogs there, but also housed monkeys, 14 lemurs and flocks of wild birds which she had special licenses for.
“I started out having lemurs because they are a great animal, and I was very interested in conservation in Madagascar where they are from and saving rainforests and forests,” she said in a 2016 appearance on “The Meredith Vieira Show. “
“It’s actually really easy in Los Angeles, because the climate is almost identical. And then I just fell in love with them.”
Alley died at age 71 following a “battle with colon cancer” that she only “recently discovered,” her children announced on Monday.
