Russell Crowe’s puppy, Louis, has died in a tragic accident at just 16 months old.
The Oscar-winning actor shared the news via Twitter Thursday alongside a photo of the black and white pooch.
“This is Louis the Papillion. 16 months old. Tiny, cheeky, brave. He won my heart,” Crowe wrote.
“Unfortunately today, on the second anniversary of my fathers [sic] passing, Louis was hit by a truck,” he continued.
“We tried to get him to the vet, but he died in my arms while I was telling him how much we loved him.”
The “Gladiator” star, who is an avid animal lover, previously shared a photo of him and Louis wearing matching shirts.
“I’m not at all a fan of dressing dogs up, but, a friend bought little Louis a @RalphLauren polo so he can match with dad,” he captioned the snuggly snap in December 2022. “I think the other dogs on the farm are going to get jealous. Pretty funny.”

Thursday’s accident occurred exactly two years after Crowe lost his dad, John Alexander Crowe, at the age of 85.
“Today, although the sun is shining and the torrential rain has abated, this date will forever be tinged with sadness. My dear old man, my beautiful dad, the most gentle of men, has passed away,” he tweeted at the time.
“I’m posting this because I know there are people all over the world who’s [sic] heart he touched and who’s [sic] ribs he tickled with his sparkly eyes and his cheeky attitude to everyone, and everything, and this is probably as efficient a method as any to pass on the news.”
Russell, 58, was able to spend a considerable amount of time with his father while quarantining together during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The “A Beautiful Mind” star even documented some of their moments together, posting a picture of the pair sitting together in the sunshine in April 2020.
Aside from being a dog dad, Russell shares two sons with his ex-wife, Danielle Spencer: Charles, 19, and Tennyson, 16.
The pair married in 2003 but separated in 2012, with the actor infamously auctioning off some of their personal items following their 2018 divorce.
He is currently dating Britney Theriot, who is 27 years his junior.
While it’s unclear whether not Russell shared Louis with Theriot, the former actress appears to be a dog lover, too, based on her social media.
