(NDSU Athletics) FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State baseball team plated two runs and loaded the bases in the ninth before falling short against South Dakota State, 8-2, on Friday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field.
With the loss, NDSU finishes its season with a 23-30 (16-7 Summit) overall record. Third-seeded South Dakota State (24-27) advances to face top-seeded Oral Roberts (45-11) in the Summit League Championship on Saturday at 1:05 p.m.
Both teams battled through three scoreless frames as Carson Jacobs held off base runners in each of the first two innings. South Dakota State opened up the scoring grabbing a 2-0 lead with a two-run double into left center off the bat of Reece Anderson in the fourth inning.
Anderson once again came through for the Jackrabbits in the sixth adding a run with an RBI single into left field to make the score 3-0. SDSU then cracked the game open in the seventh plating five runs on four hits to stretch the lead to 8-0 after Dagen Schramm delivered an RBI single to right field.
Stephen Lund attempted to spark the late rally with an RBI single before Cadyn Schwabe followed it up with an RBI single to right center to cut the deficit to 8-2 in the ninth. The Bison continued to apply pressure loading up the bases, but went on to leave all three stranded and dropped the contest, 8-2.
Jacobs (2-5) made the start on the mound going a season-high 3.2 innings with a season-best five strikeouts. Reese Ligtenberg finished the final two innings with two strikeouts.
NDSU notched six hits as a team with Jack Steil going 2-of-3 at the plate with one run.
